Our Story

History, Mission and Vision

Avanzamos is a Nevada non-profit organization formed April 22nd, 2019 as a progressive, grassroots initiative to organize and mobilize youth for undocumented community wellness and intersectional justice. Avanza, for short, was founded in response to the Clark County School District shutting down as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through advocacy, dialogue, empowerment, and mentorship, we build healthy relationships with ourselves, our families, and our communities with the goal of advancement. Its core programs are Group Z, a socialization and support virtual group, Futurx, the youth leadership development program, and El Mercado, a monthly business highlight.

The City of Las Vegas is minority-dominated and 33% of its residents are Latino/Hispanic. The emotional, mental, and financial stress onset by the public health crisis is driving up suicide, domestic abuse, and child abuse rates across the nation. There is an urgent need to address mental health stigma as well as the already-present issues, homophobia, transphobia, and bodily autonomy, pervading and hindering the Latinx community. In addition to the weight of generational trauma and navigating a divisive and capitalist system as a colored person, second-generation immigrants and activists, Group Z, have a responsibility of healing and fighting for themselves, their families and their community’s well-being to shape an equitable and prosperous future. The pandemic has ushered in a transformation of traditional organizing, where anyone can be an activist - from their homes, their phones, and through events. This is true for the global intersectional activists nationwide and why Avanzamos is focused on, but not limited to local efforts. Determined youth are not to be undermined or underestimated, but rather, taught to break glass ceilings and not fit into glass slippers. Often, it’s just a lack of support, a safe space, and structure that barricades one’s identity, stifles creativity, power, and wellness.

With respect to navigating a divisive and capitalist system, it’s often diverse microbusinesses, entrepreneurs, and aspiring agents of change that are cast away as a product of fear, lack of network, financial limitations and inherent government and institutional distrust. Avanzamos core programs are designed to address intersectional justice such as health, racial, economic, reproductive, and LGBTQ issues; encourage participants to use their power, their identity, to empower; open dialogue that transcends identity, generation and status; uplift, strengthen and expand network, and drives activism for community well-being.

Our primary outreach to the Latinx undocumented community and youth is through utilizing digital tools, social media platforms and SEO. Avanzamos is proud to have coast-to-coast (Las Vegas to New York) following and participation.

President and Founder's Message

I’m Jas, a Battle Born proud product of East Side Las Vegas, Culinary Local 226, and a Guanajuato, MX immigrant, single mother.

Avanzamos was created with two hands, one for healing and one for defense.

My pledge to you is that I’ll continue advocating for those who were taught they have no voice, no choice in their circumstances, from coast to coast.

Meet our maternal coordinator, Livia!

¡Sobreviviente!

Encantado de conocerte!

Quem sou eu?

Achei necessário me apresentar nesse momento...

Sobrevivente!

Nice to meet you!
